Let’s talk boy versus girl when choosing the gender of dog you want. When it comes to choosing gender I find a lot of people have strong opinions on the gender they want and largely the opinion is based off misconceptions or experience with other breeds. Let me first say there are some breeds that have distinct gender differences in temperament but I will be referring only to Australian Labradoodles and English Goldendoodles. I have had a ton of experience raising and living with both male and female Australian Labradoodles and English Goldendoodles and the thing that I have observed is that I have found temperament to be individual to each dog. So lets talk misconceptions.
Myth: All male dogs constantly mark indoors.
Fact: While intact males may mark more, proper training and neutering can significantly reduce or eliminate marking behavior. Many male dogs never mark inside at all! My intact male dogs do not mark in my home.
Myth: Male dogs are more dominant than females.
Fact: Each individual dog and be submissive, neutral, or dominant. I find more dominant behavior among my females but again is dependent on each individual dog.
Myth: Male dogs canβt be affectionate or cuddly.
Fact: Many male dogs are incredibly loving, loyal, and enjoy snuggling just as much as females! Personality varies by individual, not gender.
Myth: Male dogs canβt live together peacefully.
Fact: With proper introductions and training, male dogs can get along just fine! Bonding depends on temperament, not just gender. If you have a dominant male at home I will recommend a female as the second dog but my boys get along together great and are best buds.
Myth: Female dogs are harder to train than males.
Fact: Both male and female dogs can be trained successfully with consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. Training difficulty depends on the individual dog, not their gender.
Myth: Female dogs are always calm and easygoing.
Fact: Every dog has its own energy level! Female dogs can be just as playful, energetic, and curious as males, depending on breed and personality.
